Red Ox Natural Flavor - Twist Tobacco

Red Ox Natural Flavor - Twist Tobacco

Traditional tobacco twists have a rich history dating back to colonial America and the early fur trade era of the 1600s-1800s. These tightly wound ropes of dark air-cured tobacco were a valuable trade commodity, serving both practical and ceremonial purposes among Native American tribes and European settlers.

The preparation method remains largely unchanged since pre-colonial times: carefully selected tobacco leaves are stripped, stemmed, and twisted into compact ropes before being air-cured. This process produces a dark, robust tobacco that can be stored for extended periods without losing its properties. The distinctive twisted form made it easy to transport and trade along historical routes like the Great Lakes fur trading networks.

The uses of tobacco twists remain deeply rooted in Native American spiritual traditions, where they play important roles in medicine bundles, prayer ceremonies, and sacred blessings. Many tribes consider tobacco (known as "sacred tobacco" or "ceremonial tobacco") to be a sacred plant that facilitates communication with the spirit world. The smoke is believed to carry prayers skyward, and the plant itself is often used as an offering.

These twists can be used for traditional pipe smoking or incorporated into herbal smoking blends. The dark air-cured tobacco used in these twists is known for its full-bodied character, similar to what would have been traded between Native Americans and European trappers during the height of the North American fur trade.

Offering these tobacco twists as gifts to Native Elders continues to be a practice that acknowledges the historical importance of tobacco in many indigenous cultures. However, it's crucial to approach this with cultural sensitivity and awareness of individual preferences and tribal customs.

Our traditional twists are crafted following historical methods, available in two sizes:
Small twist is approximately 5" long and weighs 1.3 ounces.
Large twist is approximately 6.5" long and weighs 2.2 ounces.
