The Smudging Ceremony

The Smudging Ceremony
Blackfoot
Photographed by an unknown photographer

Circa 1900

These two Nitzitapi, "Real Person" (Blackfoot) men, Rabbit Carrier and Sitting Eagle, are burning sweetgrass and sage in a purification ceremony, perhaps to prepare for hunting. They will cleanse themselves with the smoke, which serves to symbolically link earth and sky.
