A shield possessed personal and group medicine, power that could be renewed by soaking up the sun's rays. Shields made of thick rawhide could deflect arrows, lances and round musket balls, but the main protection of shields has always been of a spiritual nature, rather than physical. Deer dew claws imparted swiftness to the warrior; turtle shells, long life and protection; fringe, the aid of Tate, the wind; the color black, invulnerability and victory. A warrior's shield announced who he was, what medicine he believed in, what society he belonged to. He wore this banner into battle, both to draw power for himself and to instill fear in his enemies. He hung his shield in or by his tipi, imparting this same power and protection to his household.
