"Hinmaton Yalatkit", Nez Perce (1840-1904).
One of the most respected Indian leaders of
the 19th century, Chief Joseph was the best
known of the Nez Perce chiefs who led the tribe
on it's epic journey in 1877, covering 1700 miles
and standing off the U.S. Army in numerous battles
before finally surrendering near Snake Creek in the
Bear Paw Mountains and within fourty miles of
sanctuary and the Canadian border. This portrait
was taken about three weeks later at Fort Keogh,
Montana Territory, by post photographer John H. Fouch,
and is now recognized as the first photograph of
Chief Joseph.
