(c. 1849-1932) Plenty Coups, meaning "many
achievements,"became a chief of the Crow at
age 25, recognized as one of the great warriors
of the time. He boasted of having never fought
against the whiteman. During the Sioux Wars of
1876, he was the chief of General Crook’s Indian
scouts. Plenty Coups became the principal Chief
of all the Mountain Crow in 1904. So great a leader
was he that following his death the Crow people
decided they would never have another chief. This
chief and warrior earned his name in life after having
achieved some 80 feats of valor in combat against
tribal enemies.
