Chief Washakie
Shoshone

(1804-1900) The principal chief of the Shoshoni
people, who lived in the Green River Valley of
Wyoming and Utah, Washakie advocated peace
with the whites while he encouraged warfare
against his traditional Indian enemies. At the
age of seventy he was known to have taken
six enemy Indian scalps.
