Northern Cheyenne Chiefs (1820-1904 & 1810-1883)
A rare photograph of the two most important
Northern Cheyenne chiefs. The prowess of Little
Wolf as a warrior is evident by the numerous
enemy scalps displayed on his shirt. Following
the defeat of Custer on the Little Bighorn, both
leaders were captured and sent to Indian Territory
in Oklahoma, where in 1878, they led their people
in a daring 1500 mile escape attempting to return
to their old land. Pursued by nearly 10,000 soldiers,
a capture was inevitable. The escape attempt won
them a new reservation within the countrythat was
once theirs.
