Southern Ute Chief (1840-1936).
Succeeding Chief Ouray in 1880, Charles Buck
became the first Ute leader during the Reservation
period. He is remembered for leading the rescue
of the women and children abducted during the Meeker
Massacre and riding with Geronimo in President Theodore
Roosevelt’s 1905 Inaugural Parade. Buckskin Charley is
pictured wearing his prized Benjamin Harrison 1890 Peace Medal.
