The turtle was honored because its shell symbolized protection, good heat, and a long life. Because the shell was thought to safeguard at close range, turtle amulets were found near infants and actual shells were attached to some combat shields. The turtle Knife and Sheath commemorates the turtle’s special powers and stature. A turtle emblem is painted on the sheath. The knife handle is decorated wit elements of the turtle’s surroundings - an abalone shell appears as a symbol of water and etched zigzag denotes land, and the fringe signifies the wind. Together the knife and sheath measure approximately 19” by 5”.
