The deer of the wooded hills and grassy plains were special animals to the Sioux. They were admired for their speed, agility and alertness. They were also treasured for their food, medicine, and clothing value. This staff honors the deer and was carried in special ceremonial dances honoring the animals of the land.
It is made with an antler, antler buttons, a leg, dew claws and skin, all from the deer. Also involved are Italian glass trade beads, tin cones, brass bells, and ribbon.
