CEREMONIAL LANCE

The lance was the primary weapon used by the Plains Indians in their hunting and killing of buffalo. The hunt was a dangerous event because the brave would have to ride into a herd of buffalo getting so close to his prey that he could thrust his lance into it for a kill.

This lance honors the buffalo hunt. It is shorter in length than the hunting lance because of its ceremonial use. Attached to the lance are seven feathers representing the seven Western Sioux Tribes. This type of blade was given to tribal chiefs as a very special gift from a trader or dignitary desirous of honoring the chief. The shaft is covered with blue trade cloth, sinew stitched rawhide, red and white beads, and buffalo hide and fur.
