BUFFALO KNIFE WITH SHEATH AND BELT

Processing the buffalo required durable tools because every part of the animal was used for some purpose. This knife represent s the kind of knife that would do an effective job of skinning the beast, cutting the meat, and dealing with the bones and other parts. The handle is fashioned out of deer antler, considered the sturdiest of handle materials. Its shape naturally fit the hand well, giving the knife’s user better strength and control. The blade is hand-forged iron, a very strong material that quickly replaced bone and flint in the late 1800’s as trade advanced on the Plains frontier.

The sheath and belt are made of buffalo leather, which is strong and long-lasting. More that 300 brass spots, another popular trade item, are used to decorate the knife and sheath. The knife and sheath measure approximately 14” and the belt is 38” in length.
