TURTLE SHIELD

The Turtle is a powerful symbol of protection, long life and health. Babies received a turtle amulet that they would keep close throughout life, imparting this safety to them. Turtle shells were sometimes attached to combat shields because they were thought to safeguard particularly at close range. Sacred designs such as the turtle were received in dreams or visions; placing these symbols on the shield conferred the animal’s protective power to the owner.

The Turtle Shield is made of rawhide over a willow hoop. A leather strap allows it to be flung over the shoulder or around the neck - as often worn by warrior on horseback - and an arm hold permits it to be carried, as in battle or during a dance. Brass bells and imitation eagle feathers hang from the shield.
