This overall design represents all of the various aspects of life to the Plains Indian. It symbolizes the never ending circle of life which starts with birth, then goes to maturity, then to old age and death with the completion of the hoop in rebirth here or in the spiritual world. The individual who has his life in order stands in the center of the hoop to see, to understand, and to be guided by the various paths of life around him. The best compliment one can pay an individual is to say that he stands in the center of the hoop of life or that he lives on the correct path of life.
The background had sixteen points which represents the sixteen different aspects of life in which the holiness of the Great Spirit is manifest – sun, sky, earth, stone, moon, wind, falling star, Thunder Being, buffalo, two-legged (bear and man), four winds, the whirlwind, and four mysteries having to do with shadows, shade, soul and potency. The brass inlaid in the skull is similar to brass the Indians obtained as a trade item. It was a very rare trade item and was reserved to be used only in the most important art work. This skull is one of the largest available. The horn covers are highly polished and have brass rings and leather wraps. The background is made of brass, rustic wood and leather and holds medicine bundles with feather fluffs.
Made by Native American and non-Native American artists.
