FIRST RAIN SHIELD

Winters on the Plains have always been harsh, and the coming of spring was a cause for celebration. The first soaking rain cleansed the earth and freshened the air and brought forth a lush, green growth that announced spring’s return and the arrival of life-giving water to the semi-arid Plains.

The people looked to the behavior of birds, the spiritual patrollers of the skies, for signs of impending storms. As messengers fro the spirits they signaled coming events, including weather. The raven, a bird of great wisdom, foretold events and recommended courses of action. The acrobatic flying of swallows signaled the storm had passed and all was again safe.

This shield shows a raven in the darkened sky with lightening bolts jumping from its beak, eyes and wings. Playful swallows dart in a yellow glow. The color contrast, besides depicting pre- and post-storm skies, represents bird’s ability to live in both worlds. The shield is trimmed with imitation raven feathers.
