Because the male elk will fight to his death to protect a mate, Plains people considered it a symbol of love and power. An Elk Dreamer was one who saw elk in visions and so gained the power of elk medicine – helping a young man find a mate, bringing peace to quarreling spouses. The skull is mounted on a base of wood and leather that symbolizes the Red Road (the good path to walk in like), the Black Road (of selfishness and trouble) and the diagonal directions (the paths of people who are confused, neither on the Red Road nor the Black Road) – the condition of some people in love. The Elk Dreamer helped return such to the Red Road.
Leather fringe hangs from the horn cover bases and bells, representing constant alertness, are strung on a leather strand between the horn tips.
Approximately 24" by 24".
