BUFFALO TRACK SHIELD

The buffalo was believed to be directly related to the Great Spirit. It was a natural symbol of the universe and was central to the sacred beliefs of Plains Indians. Honoring the buffalo was an integral part of ceremonies. The buffalo also meant life itself. Almost every part of the animal served a purpose, providing food, clothing, shelter, tools and weapons.

The Buffalo Track Shield shows human footprints following buffalo hoof prints, indicating how nomadic tribes depended on living close to the buffalo. This design also represents a tracking expedition occurring under the cover of a crescent moon. The shield is decorated with items to ensure a successful hunt; horsehair to honor the horses, deer toes to give the hunter the agility of deer, and uniquely twisted leather strands to give the hunter the speed of the wind during the hunt.
