The Soyoko rite is part of the Powamu ceremony which prepares children for adulthood by demanding them to do small chores and th correct bad habits. A group of monster-like Soyoks and Ogres visit each house in the village threatening to eat the children who have misbehaved or failed in their tasks. Relatives and parents ransom the children with gifts of food.
