Quirts were used mainly to motivate horses by using a whipping or prodding action. The zig-zag design of this one was d for a more compassionate purpose - as a back scratcher to sooth irritations out of the horse's reach. The handle is decorated with brass tacks. These were tade items of the frontier era and popular in the late 1800s.
Quirts were also used in "counting coup." This was an act where daring braves would touch an enemy with a non-lethal object rather than attacking with intent to injure or kill. Youthful warriors that had counted coup earned the respect of the comrades and were prestigious members of the tribe.
