CEREMONIAL BUFFALO SKULL
Ceremonial Buffalo Skull

The ceremonial Buffalo Skull is a very authentic rendition of the skulls used by Lakota people in the Sun Dance ceremony. Abstract imagery is used on the skull to represent the rain and snow, both considered male forces in the universe. Each Sun Dance priest conducted his ritual according to his own dreams or visions and thus a variety of painted designs were used. This skull has been naturally weathered by Wi, the sun, and Makajou, the rains, for many years on the plains of South Dakota.

The male buffalo represents by association all of the male procreative powers of the universe itself. Its skull represents the tangible from of the Great Spirit who oversaw the well-being of the tribal members in the physical world and in the spiritual world. The Ceremonial skull is stuffed with native sweetgrass and has twine wrappings at the base of the horn covers. Approximately 22"x 20".

Made by Native and non-Native Americans.
