Al-che-Say was a renowned cheif born in the mountains of north-central Arizona. His Apache name was Tsajin, "Swollen One".

He enlisted as a scout in 1872 and is described in US Army records as about 20 years old, 6' 1" tall, with a "copper complexion" and black hair.
